You’re almost through the 1^st semester! I hope that your classes are going well and that you’re keeping up with all your projects and assignments. Remember that the library has resources and databases to help you with all your research needs. I am also available to help you in locating the best resources for your projects and research papers, just ask!

Remember that the library is open during lunch and after school. You are also welcome to stop by during your off hours or during class (with permission of your instructor).

Welcome back! You might have noticed that over the summer the library experienced a lot of changes, the biggest of which was its move from C building to E building. The high school library is now located in E-101 and shares space with the middle school library. The library still offers the same great resources as before, stop by and check it out.

There is also a new high school librarian. Nicole Morello received her Master’s in Library and Information Science from LSU in 2005 and spent the past six years as a Reference Librarian and Assistant Professor at Baton Rouge Community College. Her passion is information literacy instruction and she is very excited to be at Parkview Baptist School. She is eager to work with both faculty and students on fulfilling their research needs. Please stop by and say hello and ask how she can assist you in being more successful this year.

High School Library Gets a Facelift

Thanks to a generous donation from PTF (Parents, Teachers, Friends) as well as support from the school, the PBS High School Library is a welcoming and comfortable space to work and read.

New shelving was added to make the collection more accessible for research and reading. With the help of student library aide Sarah Storer, the entire library book collection was rearranged. The library now has a research room that holds the nonfiction section and provides space for classes to meet. The fiction and biographies are located in the reading room, which allows for reading and independent study.

New chairs were added to the research room to provide comfortable, sturdy seating for classes. The most popular additions to the library were four tablet arm lounge chairs. These chairs have tablet arms that swivel to the front to provide a working surface for use with books or laptops.

The most recent addition was lounge seating provided by the school and a donation from the National Honor Society. Students have relaxing workspaces with two couches, two lounge chairs, and five footrests.

Celebrate Teen Read Week with the
PBS High School Library and Bookaholics Anonymous Book Club!
October 19 – 22

You could win a Barnes and Noble Nook eReader!
Two Barnes and Noble Nooks will be given away: one to a student and one to a teacher. Students who participate in the Teen Read Week activities will be entered into a drawing for the chance to win a Nook. In order to be eligible for the drawing, a student must:

attend the speed booking party (Tuesday, October 19, lunchtime)
dress up as an author or character from a book or graphic novel (Wednesday, October 20)
“get caught reading” at least 4 times during Teen Read Week. (Monday through Thursday)

Teachers who give out Get Caught Reading Cards and dress up on Thursday will be eligible for a chance to win a Nook!

New Books: The Red Necklace & The Silver Blade by Sally Gardner

Don’t be fooled by the cover of The Red Necklace! This book is not strictly for girls. In fact, the main character is a boy. If you enjoy historical fiction with a dash of the fantastical, this book is for you.

Synopsis of The Red Necklace (from the inside cover):
The winds of change are blowing through Paris in the winter of 1789, both for France and for our hero, a striking and mysterious Gypsy boy named Yann Margoza. He was born with a gift for knowing what people are thinking and an uncanny ability to throw his voice, and he has been using these skills while working for a rather foolish magician. That work will soon end, however, and on the night of the magician’s final performance, Yann’s life will truly begin. That’s the night he meets shy Sido, an heiress with a cold-hearted father, a young girl who has only known loneliness until now. Though they have the shortest of conversations, an attachment is born that will influence both their paths.

And what paths those will be! While Revolution is afoot in France, Sido is being used as the pawn of a fearful villain who goes by the name Count Kalliovski. Only Yann, for Sido’s sake, will dare to oppose him.
